HARLINGEN - A Harlingen police officer remains on administrative leave amid allegations he sexually assaulted a teenage girl.
CHANNEL 5 NEWS has confirmed the allegation has led to a Texas Rangers and Child Protective Services investigation. A law enforcement source tells us the sexual assault happened at a Harlingen public housing complex.
We learned the officer worked as a security guard at the LeMoyne Gardens Apartments, near the Valley International Airport. The girl's family tells investigators the officer befriended her and eventually sexually assaulted her at her apartment on several different occasions.
Chief Daniel Castillo tells us he "needs more time to do his job." We confronted him Wednesday night after a city commission meeting. When asked exactly what the allegations against the officer were, the chief responded, "he cannot comment until the investigation is complete." He expects to release more details in the coming days. Castillo and other top administrators have previously refused to comment at all about the investigation.
The officer involved is on administrative leave, pending the outcome of a criminal investigation.
Several weeks ago, CHANNEL 5 NEWS filed an open records request with Harlingen police asking for information about all of their officers who have been put on leave recently. The assistant city attorney refused to release the information to us, calling it sensitive police material.
He asked the attorney general for guidance. He wrote, “To release this information would not only expose internal police department procedures, but would also expose personnel information about individual officers, which would raise privacy concerns."
